What to pack for a sailing week?

First and most important thing is to pack all things in a duffel bag. Since it is essential to keep clear space on the boat, then when you unpack, you can fold the duffel bag and store it neatly in the compartment.

Generally it depends on the time and area. But in any case you can wash your clothes with special travel laundry detergent. *

Since we usually sail in warm areas,  this should be sufficient  - just need this:

  • It is recommended to wear this on the flight to save space: Light windbreaker jacket, long sleeve shirt & pants (best are zip-offs). To be used as “dressed-up” look for going out or chilly nights. Or take another clothing for that if you cannot combine that.
  • Under your clothes: your bathing suit - in warm zones you will wear them 24/7, so maybe a 2nd if you want to wash out the other.
  • No socks, but Shoes: Functional, best would be waterproof barefoot shoes you can swim with and climb rocks and avoid sea orchids.
  • In any case: No high heels on board, please (white) soles, never black: they leave black stains on the deck. Flip-flops are not suitable on the deck: they slip dangerously on the deck.
  • Sunglasses and Head protection with mounting (e.g. neckstrap/ holder) *
  • Sun Cream and After sun cream, shampoo, conditioner *

* = can be provided at the spot

Optional:

Sailing gloves and shoes

All ages are welcome on board from 18+! Mostly they are in the mid 20s to mid 50s.

The sailing distance per day varies during each day of the sailing week. As we sail from coast to island and/or from an island to an amazing secluded bay. We start sailing in mid-morning hours (right after breakfast) to our next destination, and cover a sailing distance of about 20-70 km, arriving at port or bay at either noon hours or afternoon closer to the evening (just before a gorgeous sunset!) During the entire week of sailing we cover a distance of approximately 150-250 km per trip!

Following dangers are extremely rare. We cope them by a combination of preparation, knowledge, and a safety-first mindset. The skipper knows about it and will teach you all necessary actions. Relatively the first 2 are the most likely cases to happen. On the other hand, it is very easy to take countermeasures with these:
  1. Dehydration and Sun Exposure: Spending time on the water can lead to dehydration and sunburn. Drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and protect yourself from the sun with appropriate clothing and hats.
  2. Seasickness: see separate question
  3. Collision: Colliding with other boats, obstacles, or land can lead to accidents. Maintain a lookout, follow navigation rules, and stay aware of your surroundings.
  4. Weather Conditions: Unpredictable weather changes, storms, or strong winds can pose risks. Check weather forecasts before heading out, and carry appropriate safety gear, such as rain gear, warm clothing, and flares.
  5. Man Overboard: Falling overboard is a serious risk. To cope, always wear a life jacket, stay within the boat's designated boundaries, and have a rescue plan in place.
  6. Mechanical Failures: Engine breakdowns or equipment malfunctions can leave you stranded. Regularly maintain your boat, carry essential tools and spare parts, and know basic troubleshooting.
  7. Navigational Hazards: Rocks, sandbars, and shallow waters can damage the boat. Use nautical charts, GPS, and depth sounders to navigate safely.
  8. Emergency Situations: Accidents, medical emergencies, or fires can happen. Have a well-stocked first aid kit, know emergency procedures, and carry communication devices such as radios or satellite phones.
It's possible to experience seasickness, especially if you're prone to motion sickness. Seasickness occurs when your balance system gets disrupted, typically during a boat ride or on open water. Symptoms can include nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and a general feeling of discomfort. To minimize or prevent seasickness, consider the following steps:
  • Maintain a stable position on the ship, preferably at the center where movements are less pronounced.
  • Even better: Steer the ship in the helmet, occupy yourself and fix your gaze on the horizon or a steady point in the distance to help balance your senses. “Get your balance right” (Depeche Mode)
  • Avoid reading or engaging in intense visual activities as they can exacerbate symptoms.
  • Breathe in fresh air and avoid enclosed spaces.
  • Avoid consuming heavy or greasy meals before the journey.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking enough water to minimize dehydration-related symptoms.
  • Over-the-counter motion sickness medications are also available and could be considered. However, consult a doctor before taking them to account for potential side effects or interactions.
Keep in mind that individual reactions can vary. If you have concerns, it's advisable to consult a doctor or travel medicine specialist to discuss the best course of action for you.
